The Question Is “How Many Calories Per Day To Lose Weight?”

I will expand in this post on “how many carbs per day to lose weight.” No-one knows the precise amount of carbs to eat in order to lose weight. However, most people agree that a healthy, balanced diet should contain the following amounts of carbs, proteins and fats:-

  • You want to make about 50% of the calories you eat carbohydrates
  • You want to make about 30% of the calories you eat protein
  • You want to make about 20% of the calories you eat healthy fats.

So, it is NOT a question of how many carbs per day to lose weight, it is a simple matter of how many calories per day to lose weight.

Provided you are eating the right amount of calories (in the correct proportions) i.e. you are eating less calories than you burn…then you will lose weight. If you want to lose weight faster, you can add some exercise into your daily regime. The more exercise you do the faster you will lose weight. The more exercise you do the more efficient your metabolism will be and therefore the more weight you will lose.

Don’t be tempted to reduce the amount of calories you consume too drastically as the body doesn’t particularly like to do that. So many diets fail because they become too difficult to stick to because the amount of calories has been reduced too much. Doing this only slows down your metabolism which is not what you really want to do as this makes it harder to continue to lose weight and subsequently much easier to put the weight back on again.

In nearly all cases, it is much better and healthier to lose weight by increasing the amount of exercise you do as opposed to reducing the amount of calories you consume. Stick to your recommended daily allowance and then add the exercise. You will lose weight in no time.

The following table will give an example of how many carbs per day to lose weight for a typical female based on the 50%/30%/20% ratio.

It is recommended that a female eats around 2200 calories per day. So the breakdown will be as follows:-

  • 1,100 or 50% of the calories you eat would be from complex carbs meaning you would eat 275 grams of carbs a day since 1g of carbs = 4 calories & 275g of carbs x 4 = 1,100 calories.
  • 660 or 30% of the calories you eat would be from protein meaning you would eat 165 grams of protein a day since 1g of protein = 4 calories & 165g of protein x 4 = 660 calories.
  • 440 or 20% of the calories you eat would be from healthy fats meaning you would eat 49 grams of fat a day since 1g of fat = 9 calories & 49g of fats x 9 = about 440 calories.

If you are eating the right amount of calories per day and exercising and eating your carbs, proteins and fats at a 50/30/20 ratio then you should lose weight.

How Many Carbs Per Day To Lose Weight?

The answer to “How many carbs per day to lose weight?” can be confusing. In general, people worry about the intake of carbohydrates unnecessarily. What they should be concentrating on is “How many calories per day to lose weight?

The ability to lose weight follows a relatively simple formula. If you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. It is as simple as that. It doesn’t really matter how many grams of carbohydrates, proteins or fats you eat. It comes down to how many calories you eat and how many calories you burn.

The weight loss industry in many instances confuses the issue because the more people are uncertain about the best way to lose weight, the more products they will sell. Take the question of “how many carbs per day to lose weight” for instance.

The body needs a certain amount of carbohydrates to function optimally.  Our daily intake of calories should be made up of about 50% carbohydrates, 30% proteins and 20% fats. That will give us a healthy balanced diet.

Every day more and more complicated science is being reported about how low carbohydrate diets or how low fat diets are best and how you can lose weight fast by following one of these diets. The simple truth is that you don’t need a special diet. If you follow a healthy, balanced diet and you burn more calories than you eat then you will lose weight. PERIOD!

Don’t be seduced by the notion that you can lose weight fast. Of course, you can lose weight fast on certain diets (usually by losing water from the body which is not good)  but you will inevitably put the weight back on again and in many cases put on more weight than you lost initially because your metabolism has been messed up.

Some diets will also tell you that certain foods will help you lose weight fast. These foods may do this to a very small degree but it shouldn’t matter which foods we eat provided we remember to eat a healthy, balanced diet and burn more calories than we eat.

So the answer to the question “how many carbs per day to lose weight” is, “forget about the carbs and concentrate on the calories”. Worrying too much about the carbs only confuses what is basically a simple situation.
